Tesla's Yoke Steering Wheel: Just Plain Controversial Or Actually Valuable?

Tesla's yoke steering wheel is a radical departure from traditional steering wheels, and it's been met with mixed reactions from drivers. It has since been retired as the default steering option for the Model S and Model X, but some Tesla owners say the yoke actually makes driving more fun — and maybe even safer.

Why it matters: Elon Musk is a big proponent of the steering yoke. Due to its design, it forces the driver to keep their hands on the 9 and 3 position, which is optimized for safety. The absence of a round steering wheel also improves visibility since the driver gets a full view of the road.

The yoke may look unnatural and controversial at first, but it has value. 

One example: Those who criticize the yoke should remember that Tesla set a Nurburgring lap record in a factory Tesla Model S Plaid with a yoke steering wheel. The Model S Plaid reached frighteningly fast speeds during the run, and the yoke arguably helped the driver see as much of the dangerous track as possible.

If the Model S Plaid can set a record on the Nurburgring with a steering yoke, then drivers can definitely operate their vehicle properly using a yoke. 

The downside: The yoke steering wheel is not without its drawbacks. Some drivers find it difficult to adjust to the yoke's unique design, and it can be a bit challenging to use for certain tasks like parallel parking unless you're used to it. Additionally, the yoke steering wheel is not available on all Tesla models.
